SOUTHSIDE ALLIANCE - 3RD ANNUAL PARENT/CHILD ROCKET LAUNCH
Southside Alliance 1st Annual Boat Regatta
Sunday we headed for the water activities. The boat race originally had 3 entries: Sr. High boys, Jr. High boys and Sr. High girls. At the beginning of the race there was another entry by a family. The competition was about to begin as we drew numbers to see would "sail" first.
It was amazing to see these cardboard vessels make it across the pond.
These events are sponsored by the Southside Alliance Church Youth Group. You are invited to participate whatever your age or ability. Please consider being a part of these fun, memorable events. Call our Church office at 732-6580 for more information.
The Results were:
Sr. High boys time: 48.46 seconds (winning $20)
Family boat time: 51.25 seconds
Jr. High boys time: 1:42 minutes
Sr. High girls time: 2.26 minutes
Honorable mention went to two college boys who recycled the Sr. boys boat
The display of rocket kits had been carefully reviewed, the purchase of the perfect model rocket made and the rocket had been glued and painted. It is now July 14, 2007 and during morning hours it is time to check over "the list" one more time - glue dried? enough engines purchases? bathing suit and towel packed? snack and drink prepared?
It is finally time to head south to Pennsylvania. We approach Bentley Creek and know we are just minutes away from the launch site at our host family's farm.
Cars are unpacked and it is time to decide where and when will be the best launching time. It is decided, because the winds are high, that we will eat first, set off the rockets next and finish the event with a swim.
STATS: 5 families represented, 6 launchers, 3 cheerleaders (with pom-poms) and 7 rockets (two were from last year). The youngest launcher was 9 and the oldest was....Over 40. The rockets were set off in a field and traveled high and far. One contestant almost caught his rocket as it descended. Another contestant had a full-blown search crew looking for his rocket.
It was a wonderful day of spending time encouraging one another and focusing on making parent-child memories.
Everyone was a winner (although only 2 retrieved rockets were taken home.) One of the SSAlliance families won a prize for the best cheering family and each contestent walked away with a rocket themed reward.
Thank you to our SSAlliance host family for opening up their home and making us feel welcomed!
